Madaba had been abandoned during the Mamluke era and lay abandoned until Christian Bedouin families from Kerak began moving in during 1880, discovering exquisite mosaic floors while building new houses on Madaba's ancient site. These stunning floors became part of their homes.

These new settlers initiated archaeological work in the town and discovered several notable sites, such as a theater, Cardo Maximus ruins and various buildings. Furthermore, many old Roman columns have been reused in new structures which still stand today.
